British Style Baklava

Special Bonus Recipe

Ingredients

1 Package Filo Dough

1 Stick Melted Butter or Margarine

1 Cup Bread Crumbs, Unflavored

½ - 1 Cup Chopped Nuts

1 16 oz. Can of  Lyle's Golden Syrup

Instructions

In a 9x9 or larger Pyrex glass baking dish, coat the bottom with butter or margarine. Afterward, layer the Filo, Syrup, Bread Crumbs, Nuts, and butter or margarine. Take care to drizzle the syrup instead of trying to spread it, for otherwise, the filo dough can be torn. Layering of ingredients should be more or less uniform, and an attempt should be made to run out of ingredients simultaneously. After the layering, make a few fork pricks through the baklava to permit ingredients to spread uniformly. Bake 350 degrees until browned, about 45-60 minutes.

Webmaster's Notes

No two chefs bake Baklava alike, and I experimented to perfect my own version. My version is derived as a cross between Greek Style Baklava and the British Treacle Tart. Lyle & Tate's Golden Syrup was the what was asked for in the British recipe, which imparts a buttery toffee flavor to the Baklava. Do NOT USE the Black Treacle!  Light Corn Syrup or any Blonde Molasses are possible substitutes, or even Maple Syrup.
