The Tonsuring of Reader Stephen

November 17, 2002

Wearing a black cassock, Stephen was brought forward to the Archbishop by Sub-Deacon Matthew for Reader's tonsuring.

Acolyte Marc held Vladika's Service Book during the prayers for the Tonsuring of a Reader,.

The Archbishop prepared to place the Reader's Purple Phelonion around the Reader's shoulders, this garment symbolizing his dedication to the service of God in the Church and signifying that he has been "set apart" by the Bishop for this work. Vladika lays his hands upon Reader Stephen during his Tonsuring. Archbishop DMITRI continued with the Tonsuring Prayers as Stephen wore the purple Reader's Phelonion.

The newly-tonsured Reader Stephen "Reads" from the Scriptures for the benefit of all - still wearing the purple Reader's Phelonion  placed upon him by the Bishop earlier in the Tonsuring Service.

Reader Stephen was "vested" in a gold colored Stikharion for the remainder of the Divine Liturgy Service. This garment is worn by all ordained Orthodox clergy, and symbolizes the "Robe of Salvation and the Garment of Joy". Archbishop DMITRI instructed the new Reader and all present in the great spiritual value of preparing for, knowing and sharing the Holy Scriptures.

Vladika once again lays his hands upon the newly Tonsured and Vested Reader.

Later in the Liturgy, the new Reader Stephen reads the Holy Epistle appointed for the day.
